Earlier today over on the @WeMarchOnTV official twitter we held two polls. The first asked whether Saints fans thought Claude Puel should stay at the club or leave, with a whopping 87% in favour of the Frenchman moving on to pastures new.
With Puel’s position under scrutiny and looking ever more fragile we followed up with a second, asking supporters who their preferred replacement would be if Puel were to leave the Saints this summer. In recent days a number of managers have been linked with the hot seat on the south coast, including ex Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel, former Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt and bookies favourite ex Saints player, Swansea and Leeds manager Gary Monk.
It seems that the majority of Saints fans (87%) would like to see Tuchel come to the south coast. But who is the highly rated German and what would he bring to the club?
Tuchel took over at Dortmund from now Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, big boots to fill. The young German coach has many similarities to his predecessor, he is passionate and a great motivator, he plays a high pressing, free flowing, attacking brand of football. Something saints fans had grown a custom to under Pochettino and Koeman.
This has in fact been the downfall for Puel, many fans are happy with a final Premier League position of 8th and a Cup Final, in fact on paper it could be considered a successful season. However the majority were left disappointed with the Europa League campaign but more notably the style of football on show. Negative tactics and a lack of goals at home have turned the saints faithful against him, and it seems there is no way back for the Frenchman.
Tuchel was axed as Dortmund boss a week or so ago, just days after winning the DFB-Pokal, the German equivalent to the FA Cup and BVB’s first trophy in 5yrs. It seems Tuchel is the ideal candidate; he fits the Southampton manager mould, he’s young, passionate, and plays the right style of football. He has worked at Dortmund, who employ a similar model to the Saints albeit scaled up, they bring in young, talented players and give them a platform to improve and grow before loosing them to bigger cubs.
If, and it’s a big if, the Saints can lure the highly rated German to the south coast it will no doubt be one of the signings of the Summer Transfer window and a massive coup. It could also be the catalyst to restoring some of the fans faith in the clubs Board who have been accused of having a “lack of ambition”.
Saints are yet to announce anything regarding the future of Claude Puel; they seem to be stalling on making a decision on his future following a season review with Head of Football Development – Les Reed. Tuchel appears to be the man to rejuvenate the Saints but the German will no doubt, be in high demand.
